Living on Steel Lake: A Slice of Waterfront Bliss in Federal Way

When I was 10 years old and came from Florida to visit my Dad, there were three glorious summers where he rented a home on Steel Lake. I had never lived on a lake, and each summer was full of music, gardens, swimming and adventure. I have such wonderful memories of paddling the canoe out in the waters, climbing up the neighbor’s high dive on the dock to jump into the water on hot days, and avoiding the lily pads when swimming from the shore. We had the best tanning sessions, fire pit stories, and northwest outdoor play. When Madison and I got the opportunity to represent sellers on this lake, I only had to look across Steel Lake to be inspired with nostalgia.

A quick jaunt from I-5 in Federal Way, Steel Lake offers a unique lakeside lifestyle that’s hard to find so close to the hustle and bustle of the city. With its sparkling waters, lush natural surroundings, and a friendly community, living on Steel Lake combines the tranquility of a retreat with the convenience of urban amenities just minutes away.

A Lakeside Lifestyle, Year-Round

Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of water and birdsong, with the changing colors of the lake reflecting each season. In summer, Steel Lake becomes a hub of activity, where residents and visitors can be seen swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, or simply relaxing by the water. Fall transforms the lake into a peaceful canvas of autumn hues, while winter’s quiet beauty invites cozy days inside, gazing out over the serene landscape. The beauty of nature is in your back yard!

Our sellers grew their family in this home and have lovingly maintained and restored it. Here are the top 10 things they will miss:

  1. Screeching of the Bald Eagles from our tall pine tree.
  2. The return of the osprey in the spring when the lake is stocked.
  3. The sunrise and the GOLDEN HOUR sunsets.
  4. When we get snowfalls in the winter, the beautiful silhouette of the dark water against the white sparkling snow.
  5. The anticipation and excitement of the grandchildren for opening day of fishing season.
  6. Sharing the lake with friends and family on warm summer days!
  7. The roasting of marshmallows over the crackling fire from the fire pit.
  8. Taking our nightly tour around the lake during the summer.
  9. Taking our grandchildren down to the end of the lake to watch the turtles dive into the water from the log.
  10. Sitting in the hot tub counting stars on a moon lit night.

+1 Extra: Watching the rain as it gently hits the lake.

Steel Lake Park: Recreation for All Ages

At the north end of the lake lies Steel Lake Park, a 52-acre public park that draws visitors with its wide array of amenities. The park features picnic areas, playgrounds, sports courts, and a boat launch, giving residents and guests easy access to even more outdoor activities. The park also hosts community events throughout the year, including outdoor movie nights and holiday celebrations, making it a vibrant hub for neighbors to connect and create lasting memories.

Convenient Access to Federal Way’s Best

Despite its peaceful setting, Steel Lake is just minutes from Federal Way’s shopping, dining, and entertainment. Residents can quickly access the Commons Mall, Trader Joe’s, local eateries, grocery stores, and unique shops. For a wider selection, nearby cities like Tacoma and Seattle are only a short drive away. Commuting is also a breeze, with Steel Lake situated conveniently close to major highways, making it an ideal spot for those who work in the city but want a quiet place to call home.

Embracing the Next Chapter: Finding Joy in a Quieter Home For 19 years, our home was filled with the joyful chaos of raising twin daughters. From school activities to teenage drama, from meals squeezed in between their packed schedules to late-night chats, our lives revolved around them. And now? The house is quieter. Our daughters are off at Oregon State University, starting their next chapter, and my husband Mike and I find ourselves in a phase of life that feels both unfamiliar and exciting. I know many people call this "empty nesting," but that phrase has never quite resonated with me. It makes it sound like something is missing when in reality, this is an opportunity to rediscover ourselves and each other. Reconnecting and Rediscovering With fewer schedules to juggle and less noise in the house, Mike and I have found more time to focus on things we enjoy—together. We've started taking dance lessons , learning salsa, and swing, and stepping (sometimes literally) outside our comfort zones. We joined HOTWORX gym, prioritizing our health in ways we never quite had time for before. And, perhaps best of all, we've been going out to dinner more, savoring uninterrupted conversations and rediscovering the ease of just enjoying each other's company. It feels like we’re dating again, but we have 24 years (almost 25!) of shared experiences behind us. There’s something special about laughing over dinner, challenging each other in a workout, or stumbling through a new dance move together. It’s a reminder that this next phase isn’t about loss—it’s about growth. Breathing Easier Of course, we still miss our girls, and there were emotional moments when we first dropped them off at college. But seeing them adjust, make friends, and embrace their new independence has given us peace of mind. When they’re thriving, it makes it easier for us to embrace this new season in our lives. So, instead of calling this "empty nesting," I see it as an opportunity—a time to reflect, recharge, and rekindle. Life isn't slowing down; it’s just shifting, and we’re learning to dance right along with it. -Kressent Kressent Marston RM Home Specialists | Realtor® Windermere West Campus
